Female Anatomy (Reproductive System)

  • Fallopian Tube:
    - narrow tubes that are joined to the upper part of the uterus and act as pathways for egg cells (ovum) which allows them to move from the ovaries to the uterus
    - The Fallopian Tube is usually where fertilization of an egg by sperm cells occur (conception), than the fertilized egg travels to the uterus (where it is placed in the uterine lining
  • Ovaries:
    - small egg shaped organs on both sides of the uterus
    -where eggs and hormones are produced
  • Uterus (womb):
    - shaped like a pear (hollow), area where babies grow and develop
    - 2 components: cervix and corpus
    -Cervix: lower part of uterus (connects uterus and vagina); hole that allows menstrual blood to leave and sperm to enter (used to give birth)
    -Corpus: bigger portion of your uterus that grows during pregnancy

  • Vulva: 2 folds of skin

    Labia majora and labia minora:
    - Labia majora (outer large lips): protect opening of urethra (tube that carries urine out of body) and vagina
    - Labia minora (inner small lips)
            -protect opening of urethra (tube that           carries urine out of body) and vagina
  • Vagina- muscular canal that acts as a passageway for blood during menstrual cycle, used during sexual intercourse, and carries sperm until it enters the uterus

    Clitoris- connected between labia majora and minora; sensitive piece of tissue
  • Hymen- tissue that surrounds vaginal opening, has no purpose in the reproductive system (protects babies from infections duirng pregancy)

Period Hygiene:

  • Periods can be painful, but it's important to keep the body healthy and active!
  • Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, foods rich in iron and protein
    - Make sure to stay hydrated by drinking water and teas (ginger, green, chamomile tea)
  • It is recommended to change your pad every 4-5 times a day (or more if you have a heaver flow)
    -This is prevent bad odors, infections, and any leaks!
    - Pads, tampons, menstrual cups, period underwear are some products to use, so choose one the feels comfortable.
